Guns in America
: There are at least 270,000,000 guns owned by private citizens in America.
The national discussion came to a head after the
massacre of 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School
in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012. Twenty of those killed were children ages 6 and 7.
Less than six months later in May, there were 4,477 recorded guns deaths in the USA.
During an average year (2010), the Center for Disease Control recorded 11,078 firearm homicides.
There are some people who are alarmed by this information and these events and call for the various branches of government to take action to stop the violence, but others cite the
, which provides for "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed," claiming that any addition control would violate our Constitutional rights.
The following videos offer various takes on the issue.
